THE CESSNOCK ADVERTISER
Reigning A-League premiers the Newcastle Jets take on Adelaide United in a first for Cessnock Sportsground on Saturday night.
The Jets have chosen Cessnock Sportsground to host Adelaide, according to CEO John Tsatsimas, as there are many dedicated and passionate Jets supporters in the Hunter Valley and playing at Cessnock in some small way repays that support.
Cessnock League President Merv McLennan is excited about the prospect of seeing two A- League Soccer teams at Cessnock Sportsground, particularly as one is a local team and just happens to the current A-League Premiers.
"When the Jets approached us to hold the game at Cessnock, we took the opportunity gratefully," Mr. McLennan said.
"Cessnock has been a long standing support area for Soccer, and of late the Jets, it has produced some wonderful players and with the Jets coming to town, it in some way shows we have not been forgotten by those playing in a tier a little above what we normally see."
With the actual Hyundai A-League season commencing in just a couple of weeks time both clubs are expected to field strong outfits, although their will be some interchange to finally sort out run on teams for the season start. This will be the second pre-season hit out for the Jets who drew 1-1 Perth in Perth on Saturday.
In addition to the Jets-Adelaide clash at 7pm, there will be a curtain raiser game featuring the talented Jets Youth team versus a very strong NSW Institute of Sport eleven at 4.15pm. These players are all on the fringe of first grade selection and put on a great performance, rivaling their senior team.
While the gate takings will go to the Jets the local league has been given the catering and drink rights. Food and beverages will be available from 4 pm right through the night. Those intending to come along are urged to pre-purchase their tickets from the Cessnock Supporters Club as gates open not long before kick off in the Youth League.
Local League Secretary David Cleaves is hopeful of a large roll up on the day to encourage further top quality teams, not only Soccer, to consider to our town and Cessnock Sportsground as a venue for their fixtures.
"Cessnock is under an hour from Newcastle and most of the valley and just on two hours from most areas area of Sydney, so there is no reason good crowds should not attend games scheduled for our ground," Mr. Cleaves said.
"The facilities we offer are second to none and as a club we are more than cooperative with other sporting groups, thereby encouraging them to consider Cessnock Sportsground," he added.
