SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

NEWCASTLE JETS owner Con Constantine has paid tribute to those who believed in him and his team, including the late football legend Johnny Warren, as his team prepares to take on the Central Coast Mariners in today's A-League grand final.
"He told me: 'Con, it's going to happen. One day, it's going to happen and I want you to tell everyone I told you so'. And it is a shame he is not here to see it."
Constantine has worked hard to establish the A-League side in a one-team town.
"At the beginning, it was difficult. The Newcastle Knights were a 10, and we were a six. Now, it is even- stevens. It's so beautiful, and we made it happen," he said.
"We had the funny round ball. I love the Knights as much as anyone else, but I love twice as much what the Jets have done."
He said it was a team effort that kept him going.
"My critics said the game was old-fashioned, that I didn't know what I was doing. To my critics, they can go suck a lemon. To my supporters, I love them.
"I want to thank all my sponsors, and all those who stood for us when we were down, who still came to the game week after week."
Constantine said while the Jets didn't have the same backing as other clubs, the season's results spoke for themselves.
